Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

KELSEY
KELSEY

(12.26.10)
I know this is a long time coming but I have some pics of Kelsey-now known as ZsaZsa.  She is doing wonderful.  She is a happy happy doggie with lots of love here.  She is especially attached to my 7 year old, William.  She looks for him everywhere and cries when he gets on the bus.  I have started allowing her to sleep out of her kennel; although sometimes she ends up there on her own accord.  She usually starts in William's room and ends up on Ashlyn's bed (more room).  She plays really rough with William and they both LOVE every minute of it.  We've even gotten her in the hot tub.
She tested negative again for heartworms so that is wonderful news.  She is up to 47 pounds and her coat is now beautiful.  I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!  ---- Joanna M.

KRYSTAL
KRYSTAL

(12.24.10)
(Krystal) Stella is just the cutest dog!  Each day we fall more in love with her (we have NEVER had a dog before)!  She is recovering nicely from her last heartworm treatment on Dec. 1 and is more playful and active every day.  My kids ages 10, 14, and 18 adore her!  She is currently prancing around the house in her Christmas sweater!!  My youngest has wanted a dog since she could say "dog" and she told me this morning that Stella is the best Christmas present she has ever received!!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and and Happy 2011!

Lisa

ARIEL
ARIEL

(12.19.10)
Greetings,
Ariel/Lennox asked me to send you some pictures and let you know that she is adjusting to her new home.   There is a picture of her looking for beasties such as squirrles and cats out of the front door, another one of her thinking "Okay, it is just you and me.  I have been hopping in and out of the doggie door, walking on a leash, responding to some new name, sitting, sit-downing, and staying.  What is your trick?"  The Third picture is an article from last weeks "This Week" that she wanted me to pass along.  On a more serious note, thank you for saving and rescuing her.  She a joy and a kind companion.

Fondly and Merry Christmas,
Aletha and Lennox

JAVA

(5.7.10) Thought you might enjoy a little "Java" to start off the day. As you may know, she was renamed "Harley" since she didn't seem to really respond to Java. Who knows what her original name may have been??!! So, her story with us starts with her coming to us very shy, super thin (able to count ribs and see butt bones), and very scared of things you and I would consider ordinary (ceiling fans, broom-vacs, children's toys, ice dispensers). Now, with a lot of good food and plenty of love and care, she has blossomed into a glowing, more secure and beef-ier girl. I challenge anyone to count her ribs now without palpating! She is closing in on 60 lbs, and her fur is so shiny and plush. She is so good-natured with our children who range in age from 17 down to 5, and she is a real trooper with our male dogs, one of which is a big fella @ 75 lbs. She is as curious as a cat, and she is a downright thief with items she comes across. If I am folding laundry in her presence, I can COUNT ON her stealing some article of clothing very quietly when I'm not looking. Or grabbing one of the kid's toys when they walk away. She plans her hijackings very strategically. But, rest assured she is absolutely loved every day of her existence. We adopted her in the wake of losing a precious girl boxer to cancer, and she "rescued" us from all the grief. And all along I thought it was US rescuing HER......enjoy the pictures. And thank each person involved for helping all the animals and families such as us come together.
(12.10.10)
She is a gem!  She definitely likes to be someone's shadow.  She follows me room to room which must be exhausting @ times.  She weighed only 39 lbs when HBR pulled her from the shelter, but she is about 63 lbs now.  She just shines.  And, she is the absolute quietest boxer I've ever known.  She will growl on rare events, but no barking or woo-wooing from this girl.  I even thought she may have some hearing loss, but nooooo...she can hear my ankle pop if I try to sneak out of the room, and she gets up to follow me.  She handles herself so well around our children (4 boys ages 18, 15, 6 and 6).  She gauges her level of play based on her opponent being much easier with the little people.  And, she is a trooper with the boy dogs too.  Lincoln is our fawn boxer that we rescued from a local kill facility in terrible condition, and I think Harley is his soulmate.  Sam is a white boxer beagle mix adopted from the same facility and also in poor condition.  He is her running buddy.  Those 2 are like the Energizer bunnies.  I am sending some photos of her chilling as that is something they all do well.  But she is still a little camera shy.   Harley is the dark brindle lady, and she is a doll.  We love her so much and hope to have her in our lives for a very, very long time.  And the best part is that it's obvious she loves us too.  Enjoy the pics, merry Christmas!

ROXIE

(11.17.10) Roxie is doing good. She is loving her new home. I emailed you guys a few months ago about her excessive licking and urinating in the house. Both have seemed to get better as time progressed. Lucy, her sister loves her too. They are buddies and even sleep next to eachother at night. My girls love her and she is very gentle with them :) We are still going through the "puppy" phase of chewing. We provide her with lots of toys to chew and I rotate them. I am guessing (hoping) her chewing will calm down. We run at least 3X a week and walks others, or she gets her exercise with our other dog and our neighbors dog. Thank you again for checking in on her. We love her very much! --- The Rupps
(12.2.10)
Roxie is doing well and is getting BIG. I made a grooming appt. for them both this weekend so I will get a little weight on her.  She has definitely filled out :)   She is beginning to "calm" down a little and her excessive licking is getting better for the most part.  I think she has found her place in our family.  Here is Roxie sleeping next to her "sister", Lucy.  Lucy is our dog that we found 8 years ago.  Now, they share a pillow or should I say that Roxie shares Lucy's pillow.  We love her!
