Animal Success Stories
... Janine Allen ...
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.
HARLOWE
(4.30.12) Well....Harlowe Grace Dudley is the queen of the castle! She is unbelievably smart, funny, energetic, and loving! She loves dog parks, riding in the car, sleeping in the bed, her cousin Grendal, her toys, and adores our attention, which she pretty much demands ;-) She house trained quickly although every once in a while, she has excited tee tee. We try to greet people in the front yard! She does perfect on the leash. She has visited Discovery Green Park in Houston and does fantastic with other dogs.
She has a dinosaur pillow pet (actually for people) that she loves in her crate and in the car. She crates easily. Rarely barks. She can jump very high! She loves to take a shower! We do have to get her nails trimmed at Petco, because she has very thick nails. Going to Petco is great fun for her because everyone stops to pet her and she shops for her own treats and new toy. Balls are her favorite and she will chase them as long as you can throw them.
All of her records are on file at the vet and she is on Comfortis and heartworm prevention. The vet said she looked fantastic. She is very muscular and leaner than our other boxers....that's a good thing though! She occasionally plays with the 3 labs across the street and runs like crazy.
We would all be devastated if something happened to her! We love her and think of her adoption as such a blessing!
