Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

DESTINY
DESTINY

[9.22.10] (Destiny now) Dixie is doing wonderfully! She has really become a part of our family. She is starting to fill out and we have found a few toys she likes to play with. We play together every evening when I get home and she really burns up energy in the backyard. She runs so fast I can’t keep up with her. She is so funny how she will run circles out back and try to play chase with us. She is quite a prissy thing in the morning, I have to practically drag her outside as she doesn’t like to “go” in the wet grass! Two weeks ago my son brought his Lhasa Apso over to see how they would get along. I brought Dixie outside on the leash. She was so excited to see him, wagging her tail. She started to sniff him and he tried to go Alpha male on her and snapped at her. She snapped at him and then he peed cuz he was so scared of her! LOL We brought them in the house and he hid behind his mamma the whole time. We kept her on the leash but she did really well. The most impressive thing about Dixie is the way she behaved this past week. Last Thursday night we had houseguests descend upon us. I was nervous about this. A family of 6; mom, dad, 3 yr old girl and a set of 19 month old triplets! Nothing to be worried about with Dixie! She has been so good with these children. They have petted, poked, and prodded her, and she has been absolutely beautifully behaved. We have had to move her food and water dishes because of the children, and she has taken it in stride. Their dad, my cousin, has remarked everyday how great she is with the kids and can’t believe such a wonderful dog had to be rescued!
