Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

NELLIE

(11.16.10) We adopted Nellie (now her name is Laney, well Laney Lee to be exact! :) ) on May 15, just about 6 months ago. She is doing really well. She went from 36-37 pounds and is now about 50-51. We took her to training class this summer for 8 weeks, and really- it was training for us! :) She is very smart and picked up on everything quickly. She LOVES walks and playing with all her toys. She is a sweet, little cuddle bug, always wanting to sit in our laps and nuzzle up to us giving LOTS of kisses. She does well with all people and kids; although we are working keeping her calm around small children because she tries to jump on them. Laney is still a little crazy around other dogs. She whines to greet them but gets overly excited and it comes off to the other dog as aggressive and turns into a little spat. We're working on it! She has some boxer cousins that we'd love to get her with, but they have only been able to interact for a few minutes at a time. We've had some food allergy/environmental allergy struggles, but we are working to get those under control. She is on a limited ingredient diet and treats and currently trying to figure out the best treatment for her environmental allergies. Hopefully we will soon, we are getting to be regulars at the vet! :) We are so in love with our Laney Lee! She has been a great addition to our little family. We're so glad to be part of such a wonderful organization!
