Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

FUDGE

Fudge, now Sophie, has been with our family about 2 months now. She is so very very laid back. We are working on boosting her confidence and making sure she knows...all the time.....that she is a good girl! She can't get enough lovin' in and rarely leaves my side. And I do mean rarely! ACE is our other Boxer from HBR and he is teaching her how to play when what she really wants to do is 'mother' him. She gets a little frisky streak in the afternoon that doesn't last long till a good cuddlin' nap is in order. The boys and I have taught her how to shake paws and we are even working on how to act like a lady on a leash. A two boxer home is amazing! --- Lisa, Jacob, and Grant Pifer

WINSTON

(9-16-2011) Winston originally started out as a foster with us, but since or older boxer passed in July, this provided us with the perfect opportunity to see if Winston (now Cooper) was going to be a good fit with our 9 year old boxer, Ginger. We absolutely love him and his playfulness! He has brought a whole new life into our home. He sleeps in the bed every night and loves to cuddle!

ALLISON

(9-16-2011) Allison, who is now named Nakona, came to me a few months ago and from the very first minute I knew she was a perfect fit! We walked through the front door and she went right out the back with her two new 'brothers' and ran laps around the backyard into exhaustion. She and my lab continue to do this every single day. Its like doggie Nascar in my back yard, and my hound dog stands on the patio and referees. Nakona and my lab come inside and collapse in a heap on the tile for a while and then get up and do it all over again! Nakona is really getting used to her new schedule, and having to sleep in her crate. She didn't like it much at first but she is doing just fine now. she loves to lay on the counch in the evening time and snuggle up to watch TV. Even though she can't hear it, she stares right at it like she's watching. She has also mastered several sign language commands, and loves to show them off for treats! When she came to me, nakona was a bit on the light side at 42 pounds. With a special diet and lots of exercise, nakona has filled out a bit and has now hit 51 pounds! Her vet says that is about normal, and that she seems healthy as can be . Her being deaf seems like more of a gift than a handicap, and it doesn't slow her down a bit. Plus it seems to help her sleep much sounder than anyone else in the house!! We are so blessed to have found this happy little girl and look forward to many years of snuggly wiggles!

CODY
CODY

(3.27.11)
I just wanted to announce that Cody, earned his Canine Good Citizen and passed his Delta Society evaluation to be a therapy dog.  Both of us worked very hard to achieve this with a 15 month old puppy.  We are celebrating and wanted to share with HBR.

DUCKY

03.27.11
Ducky aka Shiner has been a part of our family since February 19th, 2010. He is an amazing fit for us and we can’t imagine what we’d do without him! Shiner brings us joy and is a constant source of laughter, not only for us, but for our family and friends too. Shiner is probably the most popular one in our family!

In the year since we brought Shiner home, he’s learned a lot and had a great time doing it! Shiner finished house training soon after we got him (thank you to his HBR foster homes for getting him started) and mastered basic commands - Sit, Shake, Stay, Lay Down. Shiner learned to open the door by the handle (literally!) to allow himself in the house when he’s ready to come inside from the backyard, which is probably the most fun trick to watch! He can catch treats, play a game of fetch, and go on runs with mom or dad. One of our favorite games is Hide & Seek! Shiner loves to find us when we’re hiding in the house somewhere or hiding behind a tree or something in the yard.

Shiner has been introduced to several other parts of Texas this past year and is a great travel companion. He developed a deep love for Texas Aggie football by tailgating in College Station.  He went up to the Big D to meet his grandparents, who love him almost as much as we do! His favorite destination is definitely Houston County Lake in Crockett. Whether he’s running free playing with his canine buddies, fetching a tennis ball in the lake, chilling out on a float, or sunning on the pier – he thinks he’s in paradise! We love being able to take this little guy wherever we go!

t’s been a wonderful year for us and we are grateful for Houston Boxer Rescue for bringing Shiner to us! Shiner is truly a blessing that continues to warm our hearts and make those mundane days a blast! Thank you HBR!
