Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

IRA

(4.30.12)
Ira is doing great!   We kept his name since he was already responding to it.  He has been a wonderful addition to our family.  He has such a great personality and is a perfect companion for our other boxer, Zeus.  Zeus lost his playmate due to cancer about a year ago.  Since we have Ira, I cannot keep those two still!  They wrestle all the time.  I have attached a picture of both of them.  We really love Ira, and enjoy all his craziness!  Thank you for allowing us to adopt Ira.  I will definitely adopt another boxer when it is time.  ~ Heather

IZZY

(11.16.10) Izzy (plain fawn) is doing fine and has settled into life with our other boxer, as you can see. These two have become inseperable. We love her! --- Tip and Michelle Fuller

IAN

(10.29.09) “Hello HBR! Papi” is his new name and he responds well to it (on the left) . Papi is doing so well; he is healthy and has gained twenty pounds since he came to our home. The vet said that he is in good health but doesn’t need to put on more weight so we are watching his diet now. He is very laid- back but loves to go with Armando when he rides the bike. We walk with them as well to make sure that they get enough exercise. Candela and Papi get along so well, this is not our concern anymore. They love to watch trough the window, spend hours playing and sleep together most of the time. We love them so much and hope that they stay with us for a long, long time. We enjoy having them as part of our family. Thanks so much! We will keep you updated. Claudia – Armando – Candela & Papi”

IKE
IKE

(7.13.09) I want to thank you all for taking the time to work with me and find the perfect boxer addition to my pack. My adoption of a beautiful boxer boy named Ike has been a true pleasure. My pack had previously included Peanut, a beautiful female rescue boxer as my 5 year old pack leader, my son James and myself. From the first day we met and brought Ike home he just naturally became a part of our family. He is so smart and eager to please that we all fell immediately in love with him. Not to mention Ike is a very handsome boxer! In fact Peanut and Ike have now become true sweethearts. Ike is also an excellent guard dog barking to alert me of anything including a recent raccoon trying to enter my house. My son James has really taken to Ike and now calls him his dog. He enjoys playing with him daily as well as putting him through basic obedience drills several times a week. Ike is a big guy at 85 lbs but amazingly loves to jump 6 ft in the air and catch the Frisbee when I throw it time and time again. Our life with Ike has been filled with so much love and fun. I really want to thank you all at Houston Boxer Rescue for working so very hard to save the lives of so many Boxers in need, and especially for saving the life of one very special dog named Ike. Sincerely --- Clint Winter
