Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

CHESTER
CHESTER

(11.2.12)  Cassius, or as we call him, Cash (formerly known as Chester) is doing beautifully! I’ve had boxers for over 13 yrs. so I was ready for any encounters that he saw fit to throw at me! LOL He is just such a sweet boy and is my cuddle buddy. He has learned to ring the bell to go outside on his own, from watching his two older sisters (Piper and Olive). We go to the dog park about four days a week and are working on basic commands. He is now weighing in at 24 lbs., gaining an average of 2 to 3 lbs a week. He is a vocal boy and likes to sass at his sisters when they play. LOL I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring him into our family. Thank you for asking about him!  --RaShann S.

CLARA
CLARA

(6.21.12)  I just wanted to drop you a line and tell how well Clara is doing.  I nick named her my "Love Sponge".   She loves the attention and I love giving it to her.  I have had dogs all my life but I think Clara has to be my best dog of all that I have had.  From day one she has been a real pleasure.  I also want to thank all of the volunteers that make the Houston Boxer Rescue so successful.   Thank you again!   --- Gene W.

CODY
CODY

(3.27.11)
I just wanted to announce that Cody, earned his Canine Good Citizen and passed his Delta Society evaluation to be a therapy dog.  Both of us worked very hard to achieve this with a 15 month old puppy.  We are celebrating and wanted to share with HBR.

COOPER

03.27.11
Cooper and Harrison could not be better friends and I have taken to calling him "boyfriend " he likes to be at my side at all times.  He has taken a liking to this huge stuffed dog and carries it around the house. Too funny!

(12.13.10)
Made it home safe and sound. We also just got home from our first walk through the neighborhood. He did great!  Right now he is still sniffing around the house getting used to all the new smells.

Thank you so much, we'll be sure to keep you posted.Lori & Cooper

COCO

02.20.11
Since adopting Coco last year, she has become a family member.  She gets along with our Jack Russell, Bobby and our indoor cat, Dixie.  Coco loves to follow Dixie around the house.  Then she'll sit and watch Dixie while she's either cleaning herself or sleeping.  Dixie is 16 years old and doesn't give an inch to a dog.  But Coco will chase our outdoor cats out of the fenced yard.  Coco also lives to bark and chase our chickens up and down the fenceline when they get too close.  When a hen flew over the fence, she actually had it held down with her front paws.  She didn't try to hurt it.  John just took the hen away from her.  Coco didn't seem too upset.  Coco and Bobbie love being together.  When you see, Coco, our little Bobby is close by. Bobby is 8 years old and doesn't play with toys too much, but he will play a little with Coco before he gets tired.

Coco has fit into our family. I can not express how much we love Coco.  She'll never have to worry about looking for a home again.  She's a Bolin family member.  Everytime she looks at me with that face and those eyes, she just melts me.  I still miss my Lucky (the boxer that passed away),  butCoco has filled our lives.   I feel very fortunate that we adopted her.  She's a sweet-heart.  Thank you and the many volunteers that take care of these dogs.
