There will come a day when our tears of sorrow flow into tears of remembrance...
And our hearts will begin to heal themselves...
And grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy...
And we will hear the whisper of hope.

There will come a day when we will welcome the tears of remembrance...
As a sunshower on our souls...
A turning of the tide...
A promise of peace.

There will come a day when we will...
risk loving...
go on believing...
And treasure the tears of remembering.

 BEYOND THE RAINBOW

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth was soon to fade.

I saw a wondrous image of a place that's trouble-free
Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side
Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide!

And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see
Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!

My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.

I needed to reach out to you, to tell you that I'm well,
That this place is truly wonderful, a happy place to dwell.

That your heart shouldn't ache so, the pain should go away
I'll wait for you in comfort 'til you come for me some day.

That although we're not together in the way we used to be,
We're still connected by a bond no eye can ever see.

That when you need to find me, we're never far apart
Just look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart.

Before humans die they write their Last Will and Testament,
give their homes and all they have to those they leave behind.

If with my paws I could do the same,
this is what I'd ask...

To a poor and lonely Stray I'd give my happy home.
My bowl and cozy bed, soft pillows, and all my toys.
The lap which I loved so much, the tender, loving, touch.
The hand that stroked my fur and sweet voice which called my name.
I'd Will to the sad scared Shelter Dog the place I had in my human's heart,
Of which there seemed no bounds.

So when I die, please do not say,
"I will never have a pet again.
For the loss and pain is more than I can stand."

Instead go find an unloved dog,
One whose life has held no joy or hope, and give My place to Him.

This is the only thing that I can give...
The Love I left behind.

This is my inheritance!
My Will and my Last Testament.

LOLA's STORY

(4.2.09) I was brought into rescue with no one knowing the history of my life. At some point I had been badly broken, most likely hit by a car and never taken to a veterinarian to help me heal. In the process of my pelvis and leg being broken, nerves were damaged. Because the breaks were not repaired, constant pressure was applied to the damaged nerves leaving me with inability to sit, walk, or relieve myself, properly... Or without pain. Even the kind doctor who wanted to help me said it would be more humane to let me go. Think of me when your dog dashes out the front door, or has a half completed hole under the fence. Let my brief stay in this world have an impact on how you handle your own dogs. I should have been loved and guarded with vigilance. My life was important. ~ From Lola, with Love

LUCKY
(10.19.10) Lucky was saved from a probable gruesome death on the highway by a Good Samaritan. She was then loved and fostered while waiting for adoption. Sadly, we lost her to a brain tumor. But, her last days were filled with contentment and safety. We offer our sincere thanks to Haley for being a hero! Lucky Lady, you will be missed! --- The HBR Volunteers
