Stop. Stop right there. You are not allowed to read any further until you make me a promise. You have to promise me that you will not feel sorry for me. I repeat… You are not allowed to feel sorry for me. Do you promise? Okay. I am going to trust you to keep your promise. You can keep reading now.
My name is Jelson, but you can call me Jel. That’s what my foster mom and dad call me. I am a handsome, energetic, four month old, bundle of bouncing, Boxer, baby boy. joy! And I should warn you that everyone who meets me quickly falls for my cute puppy dog eyes, my loving and happy personality, and my sweet puppy kisses. If you don’t want to fall in love with me too, then you should probably stop reading again.
You kept reading! I knew you would. I love you already! I just know we are going to best friends. And since we are going to be best friends I guess I should go ahead and tell you about my leg. I mean, it’s not like it’s a secret, and I’m sure you have already noticed it. Remember though… You promised not to feel sorry for me. Okay. So here goes…
Before Houston Boxer Rescue (HBR) rescued me from the animal shelter, I got a big boo-boo on my leg. And it hurt really badly. It hurt so bad that I stopped using it and just held it up in the air all of the time. Lucky for me the folks at HBR didn’t care about my bum leg, and rescued me anyway. Once they busted me out of the shelter, they took me straight to the vet to try and get my leg fixed. They also promised me that all of the ouchies would go away.
While we were at the vet they did all sorts of tests and took pictures of the inside of my hurt leg. And that’s when I learned that my leg was broken very badly. The vet said that pieces of my knee were floating around in my leg and the only chance we had to save it was to go to a specialist. I thought for sure HBR would say no, but I was happy to be wrong because they took me to the first appointment the specialist had available.
And that, my friend, is where I learned that I would lose my leg. Unfortunately he said that there was nothing that could be done to save it. He said it had been too badly damaged, for way too long to be able to be fixed. He told HBR that even if he could find a way to save my leg I would more than likely be in a lot of pain for the rest of my life. And who wants to always be in pain?
And this is why I told you that you were not allowed to feel sorry for me. Because although they had to amputate my leg, I am now pain free! And to be honest, I had already gotten used to not using that leg. So nothing has really changed for me. Except that I am now pain free! Woo Hoo! Now when I run, play tug of war, or chase the ball, I can do so with pure, unadulterated, puppy joy. And please trust me when I assure you that I have not let this little set back slow me down one little bit. I act just like any other puppy!
My favorite thing to do is play. I will play all day long. I love playing with toys, and I really love playing with my foster fursister. When I’m out exploring the backyard I am always looking for new ways to play. I even like to try and play with lizards! They are really cool, but I haven’t managed to catch one yet. Speaking of being outside, I should tell you that I already know how to go potty outside. I also know how to sleep in my kennel all night and when no one is home. My foster mom and dad keep telling me I’m very smart! They are still trying to teach me how to walk on a leash though, but I haven’t quite gotten that down yet. But hey, nobody’s perfect. Right?
So there you have it. Now you know almost everything about me. You know everything except for one more little secret that I need to tell you. Come here. Lean in close so I can whisper in your ear. Okay, here goes. Of all of the people who have read everything I have had to say, you are my favorite. You are the one I want to call my best friend and be my family. Will you please fill out that adoption application so we can get this friendship started? We have a lot of playing and hanging out to do together!
