Mason’s Journal: September 25, 2018

Today is the day everything changed.

Until today the only words that I would use to describe myself are abandoned, broken, worthless, alone, and empty. Until today I didn’t think anyone could see me. Until today I questioned my existence. But then something big happened today. Here is my story…

I was living in an old, dilapidated, broken-down shed that was literally falling down around me. I was by myself and alone. I would wander the streets looking for food and praying that someone would notice me and would help. Every once in a while a man from a nearby business would throw me a few scraps of food. He helped me to exist. That is until the day his boss told him he was no longer allowed to help me because he didn’t want me hanging around. Each day became an increasing struggle to survive.  I became covered in fleas and other insects. Every little bit of my skin was bitten to the point of infection. I lost my fur. Once I lost my fur my skin became sunburned and infected. Next my eyes succumbed to the infection and it became difficult to see.

I was close to giving up. I was convinced this would be the rest of my life. Day after day, nothing would change, nothing except the loneliness that grew deeper, the hunger pains that became sharper, and the feeling of my skin crawling more and more every day. Life was always a struggle or something to just get through.

And then it happened. My miracle! My miracle came in the form of a very nice man who saw me, took my picture, and promised to come back with help. And come back with help he did! He shared my picture on something called social media and a whole bunch of people saw it. Then the people at Houston Boxer Rescue saw my picture and they promised to take care of me if I could be found. About a dozen volunteers spent hours roaming the streets, knocking on doors, and searching for me.

Once I was found a very wonderful volunteer from HBR took me to her house. I was so scared. She took me inside, gave me a bath, and fed me. This is the miracle of today; a full belly, my skin isn’t crawling, and I have a soft place to lay my head and rest. She says this is the way it was always supposed to be and this is the way it always will be from now on. Oh, and she also said that tomorrow she is going to introduce me to someone called, “The Vet”. I wonder who that could be???

When I woke up this morning I thought I was dreaming. I couldn’t believe that yesterday really happened. But it did and I am beyond grateful! This morning I was greeted with a smile, a soft pet, and given breakfast. After I ate, I was taken in the car and introduced to “The Vet”. I was really scared and did not know what to think. At first I didn’t want to go with him, but everyone eventually convinced me I should go. The vet said that I have to stay here for a little while to get some of my medical issues taken care of. He promised to give HBR a full report on me in a day or so. He said he just needs time to evaluate everything I’ve been through so that they can determine the best way to help me with all of my medical issues. Even though I’m scared I’m going to give this a chance. After all, HBR took a chance on me. The least I can do is take a chance on them!
